The applicant or client must be related to the dependent child in one of the following ways:

Blood Relatives

Including:

• A parent by legal adoption, any of the adopting parent’s blood relatives stated above and the adopting parent’s natural or adoptive son or daughter, and
• the spouse of any person above, even if the marriage has ended either by death or divorce.

Personal Relationships Page

This page is used to capture personal relationships (natural, adoptive, step), between household members who have a status in the household of Present. Each household member’s relationship to the grantee will be initially captured using the Household page, but it can be updated from the Personal Relationships page. These relationships are used by you to determine the assistance unit(s) for a household and to determine grant calculations.

When setting personal relationships, it is important to remember that the relationship must be that of the household member in the Personal Relationship tab to the household member whose name appears in the bottom left hand portion of the page. See Household Composition and Household Composition: AU Composition.

To enter personal relationships:

1. from the Members List icon, select the household member for whom you wish to add personal relationship information.  That member's name now appears on the bottom portion of the page.
2. select a household member from the select list.  The selected member's name will populate the Name field on the Personal Relationship tab.
3. from the Relationship drop-down box, select a relationship between the selected member and the original household member (the person whose name appears on the bottom of the page) For example, if the selected member is a daughter of the original household member, select Child.
4. click Save
5. repeat steps 1 through 4 for each household member until a relationship is established to all household members
6. click Next to save your entries or changes and go to the next page in the workflow, or
7. click Finish to save your entries or changes and to exit the page and the workflow

Less Common Family Relationships

The following are a few examples of less common family relationships that need to be set using the Personal Relationships page:

Example 1Example 1Mary applies for TAFDC for her husband’s grandson, Bob. Both of Bob’s parents are out of the home. Bob is a grandson from Mary’s husband’s first marriage and Mary has no blood relationship to Bob. Mary’s husband passed away shortly after they were married. Mary meets the relationship requirement because she was the spouse of Bob’s grandfather. On the Personal Relationships page Mary and Bob should be listed as grandmother and grandson.

Example 2Example 2Jack applies for TAFDC for his first cousin’s daughter, Sue. Jack meets the relationship requirement because he is Sue’s first cousin once removed. On the Personal Relationships page Jack and Sue should both be listed as first cousin once removed. 

Example 3Example 3Using the example above, Jack’s son, Peter, applies for TAFDC for Sue. Peter does not meet the relationship requirement because he is Sue’s second cousin. 

Note: Great-great grandmother (granddaughter), great-great grandfather (grandson), great-great aunt (grandniece), great-great uncle (grandnephew), great-great-great grandmother (granddaughter) and great-great-great grandfather (grandson) are acceptable relationships but are not listed in the drop-down list on the Personal Relationships page. To process these acceptable relationships, you should select great grandmother (granddaughter) and great grandfather (grandson) and great aunt (grandniece) and great uncle (grandnephew) for the missing relationships.
